The Forty Foot was a gentlemen's bathing place until about twenty years ago, when it was opened to all. My father was one of the stalwart worthies who were there most days throughout the year, and made sure ther uwere no untoward "goings on". The forty foot was immortalised in James Joyce's Ulysses.
